AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is the basic solution from Grisoft Labs designed to protect your computer against viral threats. With its simple interface, Explorer context menu integration and powerful scan engine, this program can be used to secure your computer against viruses. However, since this is the free version, you won't get support, anti-spam protection, firewall or anti-spy protection.

AVG installation components include a 'Resident Shield' which provides on-access scanning of files and an 'Email scanner' which will either detect your default email client or it can be manually configured (for advanced users). Automatic scans can be scheduled to be run repeatedly at intervals of your choice. You can choose between low priority (slow, but with less memory usage) and high priority (faster, but using more memory resources) automated scans. Manual scans allow you to scan separately files, folders, shell extensions, system areas. Un-repaired files can be stored in the 'Virus vault' until they will be cured or deleted.

After testing the program using the EICAR (European Expert Group for IT Security) test files, I noticed that AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition has passed the test regarding files downloaded using both HTTP and HTTPS protocols. Some of the malicious files have been detected by its on-access scanner, 'Resident Shield' , while others were detected after a regular system scan.

The interface is nicely designed and it makes the program very easy to use. Configuring its settings is easy even for computer rookies. While running in the background, the system resources usage is low, so it wont affect the speed of you computer.

So, here is the final version of the instant messaging tool from Microsoft. The kernel of the application hasn't changed too much, but it got lots of new online features, that makes it much interactive with the user. I really got a connection problem that was solved automatically online. I was really surprised because in general the troubleshooting button ment nothing to me. A big thumb up for Microsoft in beginning to solve automatically online problems. The second really improvement is the sound quality of PC to PC call. Much better than the one from Yahoo Messenger. You will get also a very fast and intuitive wizard that will help you set you audio device. The background interface is very similar to the one in Yahoo Messenger, but it will be much better integrated in the new Vista interface. Still let's go back to the new features:

Multiple Points Of Presence Suport - Now you can sign into Messenger v9 from several different locations and remain signed in, In v8.5 and under, signing in at a new PC will sign you out anywhere else.
Signature sounds - Make sound signatures instead of just graphical ones.
Per contact sounds - chose a sound to associate with each of your contacts' actions.
Animated Display Pictures - now you can use animated .gif files as your display picture.
Links in Status Message - Links in the status message are now clickable

Drawbacks / flaws: I had the feeling that Windows Live Messenger is running slower comparing to Yahoo Messenger, and it might not be so stable.

In conclusion: Finally a true instant messenger coming from Microsoft. it seems that the latest software from Microsoft are much better (even though the ideas are taken from different other companies).

ZipGenius is an compression and decompression utility with a lot of features. It can decompress 21 different formats, and it can compress using 4 different techniques: ZIP, CAB, TAR, or SQX. The program integrates itself into the Windows shell, so you have easy access to its functions.

The software performs quite well when compressing. However, I think that if you like to compress your files as much as possible, ZIP compression is not the best choice. ZipGenius's features are better than most other archive management tools. If you have pictures inside your archives you can view their thumbnails. Also, you can test, split, or send any archive by email.

You can view miscellaneous information about the current archive, including its MD5 sum, compression ratio, and comments. If you want to better identify the archives you create, you can sign them. The signature can contain your name, email address, your homepage URL, and a picture.

Other useful features and functions include searching into archives, encryption, and a tool for making picture slideshows. The user can also backup any folder very easily, just by using the "Backup" menu of the program. Backing up your important documents is very fast, because the program can automatically add the date and time when the backup archive was created.

Pluses: ZipGenius is flexible and easy to use, providing easy access to all the functionality required by a compression/decompression software.

Drawbacks / flaws: When I tried to repair a ZIP archive which I created, the program stopped responding for a couple of seconds. The slideshow editor also didn't work for me.

Although the market is saturated with different data backup/restore programs, it's not easy to find a program to suite your needs 100%. As shown in the title, Backup4All is a rich featured and highly versatile backup program.

When performing a backup for the first time, you find out that you can create several backup jobs, which can be grouped. You can choose one of the four predefined backup jobs. Since we're talking about predefined backup, the list can be increased with the use of plugins. What are these? Backup4all plugins for other applications can help you quickly backup program settings or profiles. For example, in order to back up Mozilla Firefox profiles you need to download and install the plugin and then create a new predefined backup job by selecting 'Mozilla Firefox Profiles'. You can get plugins for dozens of programs from the producer's website.

Some of you will find it a little bit weird that there isn't an obvious choice for a custom backup. You can create a custom backup by selecting 'None' in the 'Predefined Backup' drop-down menu. Next, you can choose to backup partitions, files, or folders. The backup files will have ZIP extensions so that they may be handled with any archiver supporting the ZIP format.

Backups can be saved locally, on optical drives or removable drives, on FTP servers, or on LAN locations. Full, incremental, differential, or mirror backup types are available. Those users worried about the safety of their data, will find out that the encryption level allows AES encryption using 256-bit keys.

Advanced settings include choosing the compression level and splitting of archives using predefined or custom volumes. Backup priority, file comparison criteria, and testing of backups are some of the features which I found quite useful while creating backups. You can also choose to run different programs before or/and after the backup process.

When put through the test, the program performed well regarding the speed of all types of backups, (but slower than Acronis True Image) in a busy working environment. Backup can be scheduled or set to complete before the system shuts down and the program can be set to send emails containing data regarding success, errors, warnings, as well as backup test errors or warnings.

Pluses: The nice thing is that you can even assign icons to your backups. The multi language support is another plus. The program has support for 15 languages. Program plugins can make your life a lot easier.

Advanced users may specify file filters for subdirectories in order to handle file exclusions. You can view statistics regarding your backups and summaries of each backup performed. In case you get lost among the settings, you can confidently use the 'Help' section, as it is very well documented.

Drawbacks / flaws: Unfortunately, you cannot backup/restore your active partition (the one which hosts your operating system).

While testing the program, I was impressed by the results. It allows you to zoom in , zoom out, rotate, flip and mirror images. There are also image adjustment tools which allow you to change the contrast, brightness, sharpness, hue, saturation, gamma for any image. You can use this application to capture a window or your full screen.

At first, the user interface poses some difficulties, but everything becomes easier and clearer after a while. A menu bar would prove quite useful.

For those who don't know, dynamic cloth is basically a way to digitally simulate the complex way real cloth behaves when it interacts with objects (such as clothing draping on a body or a table cloth hanging off a table). This adds a much more realistic look to renders, and was something I was really hoping to see added to D|S. Also, people (both Daz staff and vendors) are constantly adding new upgrades (some free, others available for purchase) that enhance rendering effects and such.

Basically, it's like a better version of Poser, only free. I tried using Poser 5 (I got it free) after I'd been using Daz Studio for awhile, but I found it so awkward that I went back to D|S.

When trying to render scenes with lots of characters (fully clothed), it may crash, but the solution is to break the scenes up with 4 or less characters, and render it in pieces, then edit it together in something like PSP, PS, or Gimp.

Some content is available for free, while others must be bought. Joining their site's Platinum Club provides numerous discounts on high quality material (although some of the older, not so good stuff is still there, for those who wish to purchase it).

D|S is compatible with many of the file types that Poser is, meaning that if an item can be used in Poser, it most likely can be used in Daz|Studio. Not all instances apply, however, and it's a good idea to check those out first before either buying an item or installing and attempting to use it.

WinZip Beta 9

The beta release of version 9 is best described as a release version in beta clothing. Over the course of 4 days of constant pestering, we never experienced a crash, error message or other problem. And in keeping with our motto of "real reviews by real users" we weren't focused on pure testing so much as backing up large amounts of data to Jaz cartridges and CD-R. WinZip appeared to work flawlessly and our backups were created without any corrupt file entries or unreadable archives.

Security first. WinZip 9.0 now fully supports 128 and 256-bit key AES encryption, which provide much greater cryptographic security than the traditional Zip 2.0 encryption method used in earlier versions of WinZip. Thank whatever heathen idols you pray to, because password protection and file encryption in previous version of WinZip were somewhat less than stellar. For the pure techies out there, WinZip 9.0's advanced encryption (FIPS-197 certified) uses the Rijndael cryptographic algorithm which, in 2001, was specified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in U.S. Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) Publication 197 as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Deutsche Institut fur Normung (DIN) also approves this stuff so the security rating is very high indeed. The technology fight over security standards has been tough lately too. After a three-year competition, the AES was announced by NIST as an approved encryption technique for use by the U.S. government, private businesses, and individuals. When properly implemented as a key component of an overall security protocol, the AES permits a very high degree of cryptographic security, but is still fast and efficient in operation. The implementation in WinZip 9 is transparent, with no discernable effect on compression or decompression speeds.

Compression ratios have improved slightly. We noticed that quite a few text and graphic files were slimmer by a few kilobytes. The overall improvement isn't huge, but it still makes a difference when it comes to fitting just that one extra file on a backup CD-R.

Capacity has improved dramatically. WinZip used to top out at around 65,000 files and 4 gigabytes per archive. Because WinZip 9 now uses a 64-bit extended file format, those 'restrictions' are effectively eliminated. Why should you care about these enormous file counts and sizes? Well for one thing, anyone who is backing up large file collections (fonts, music, images, etc.) can now rely on WinZip as a very fast and accurate solution. Anyone who has to backup collections of multi-gigabyte video files can also now use WinZip. Considering the fact that your average 25 minute digital video capture is well over 2 gigabytes in size, the enormous capacity in WinZip 9 is a welcome change. It is now easy to compress a 6 gigabyte video so it can fit on a single 4.7GB DVD-R. That means less file splitting (with all its inherent problems). Back up those precious business, vacation and family videos now.
